The other day, I announced the new series I'm working on: THE OVERSEERS. This will be a story of a superhero team and their attempts to defeat the powerful Sir Arthur McKnight, an immortal from the Middle Ages who's come back to conquer the world.
This thread will be used for hype, comments, questions, and the like. To begin, I'll post the first promo.
The mansion was mostly empty. The Overseers were all out, on numerous missions across the world. Quickfoot and Savage were fighting a new menace in South America, Mindworm was helping a small army deactivate a series of bombs in New York. Monstro and Energy-Girl were helping refugees from a volcanic explosion in Hawaii. And Jedi was sparring with a power-hungry swordsman in Japan.
One-Shot and Nightshade were all that remained in the headquarters, left behind in case anything came up. Currently, they sat by the warning screen, keeping a watch. Of course, nothing was really happening, and they were rather bored.
"So…. Eva…." One-Shot said to break the silence. "How about that Jester, huh? Real crazy guy…."
"I believe 'crazy' is an understatement, Isaac. Justin Terra is a madman, who gets pleasure out of other people's suffering."
"Well, I guess that's one way of putting it…."
There was some more silence.
"How's everyone doing?" Isaac asked, and Eva looked to the screen.
"Looks like Quickfoot and Savage are on their way home. I guess that for a guy named 'Disaster,' he wasn't much of a threat after all."
Isaac chuckled. "Well…. That was fast…."
"Thank god! Things were getting rather dull…."
Isaac nodded in silence. "You know…. they didn't have to be…."
Eva looked to him with one eyebrow raised. "How so?"
"Well, it's just…." He looked at the shapeshifter through his visors, uncertain of what to say. "I mean…. I figured it would be fun, just me and you, with the mansion all to ourselves…. A good chance to…. get to know each other better."
Eva chuckled a little. "Isaac…. whatever you're trying to say, just say it."
"Well, uh…. I kind of…. l….li-"
Suddenly, the warning signal flared. The two Overseers jerked their heads up toward the screen.
"It's Sir Arthur McKnight," Eva announced.
"Oh, damn! This guy again!"
"He's attacking the - the White House??"
"Well then, there's no time to lose," Isaac said, standing up. "We can't wait for the others - we have to go into action ourselves!"
"Agreed - let's go!"
The two ran upstairs, where Nigel, the trusted pilot, greeted them.
"Good day, Isaac! Good day, Eva! Will you be needing the Hummingbird today?"
"No need, Nigel, thank you! This is an attack on the home front!"
"Oh dear, you don't mean….?"
The headquarters of the Overseers was, in fact, situated in Washington DC, directly beside the White House in fact. The two ran outside to see the White House not too far away - and it was in flames! It was amazing that Nigel hadn't heard the attack….
"Soundproof! That must be it!" One-Shot explained. "McKnight can control energy - that includes sound waves!"
The heroes darted quickly toward the White House, passing through the weathering gates and up the lawn of dead grass. The great doors were falling off their hinges, and so One-Shot and Nightshade merely leapt over the rotting wood and into the flaming mansion.
"It'll take months of taxpayer money to repair all this damage," Nightshade griped. "So much for that Florida vacation I was hoping for…."
A scream emanated through the halls. The heroes ran through the burning building, steering clear of falling debris. Finally, they found the source - the Oval Office. Within, they could see the President buried beneath chunks of rock, and McKnight, hands flaring, slowly approaching.
Just then, a column fell down, blocking off the office. One-Shot reached for his visor, blasting the column and clearing the entranceway. One-Shot and Nightshade moved in.
"Ah, the Overseers," McKnight smirked. "How good of you to come. A quick catch-me-up for you - I was about to assassinate your President and seize this country for myself."
"Unfortunately for you, the system doesn't quite work like that," One-Shot said. "You see, the next in line would be the Vice-President. Then the Speaker of the House."
"Wanna bet?" McKnight punched the air, releasing a strike of pure energy at the Overseers, as they leapt aside.
"Nightshade, you get the President! I'll hold him off!"
"Got it!" Nightshade bolted over to the President, and starting tossing the rubble off, thinning her hands to get directly under each piece before hurling it aside.
One-Shot, meanwhile, blasted McKnight with his own energy beams, shooting out of his eye. McKnight fumbled backwards into the desk, cutting it in two. One-Shot attacked again, but this time, McKnight shot his own beam, and the two met in midair - a stalemate.
"Nice try, One-Shot, but alas, you have only that - one shot. And me, I have two…." He reached his other hand out toward Nightshade, taking aim and firing as the heroine leapt out of the way with great agility. "Think you can keep that up forever?"
"Yeah, probably, but don't take my word for it."
As McKnight kept shooting at Eva with fire, energy beams, sonic blasts, and the like, he began to lose focus on One-Shot. Taking advantage of the distraction, One-Shot dived for the ground, allowing McKnight's beam to dash over his head and strike the opposite wall, and then, he sent out another eye-beam, striking McKnight at his feet and knocking him to the floor.
"Great goin', One-Shot!" Nightshade smiled, as the two raced toward the President. One-Shot destroyed the rubble with another blast and Nightshade pulled him up. "This'll be my first time giving an order to the President! RUN!"
Without another word, the President fled for his life through the hole in the wall, not once looking back.
"How foolish…."
One-Shot and Nightshade turned to their foe only a second too late - an earbursting boom shot out as the villain clapped his hands together, and both knelt over on their knees.
"When the enemy falls, it is wise to take advantage of this to conquer. Instead, you chose to assist a feeble human, and now, you shall both perish!"
Fire shot out of his eyes, as One-Shot and Nightshade crawled away desperately.
"You are useless! You are weak!!!"
He created a whip out of solid light, and snagged Nightshade's foot, pulling her toward him. Quickly, she smoothed out her foot and slipped free, but it was already too late - McKnight was upon her, grabbing her by the throat and slamming her against the wall.
"You. Are. Dead!!!!"
"NO!!!!!!!!!!!" One-Shot removed his visor, blasting Sir Arthur McKnight with raw, unrestrained power. He dropped Nightshade, staggering back, unable to counter, falling backwards into the wall as it collapsed upon him.
One-Shot returned the visor to his eyes, and ran up to Nightshade.
"You okay, Eva?"
"Yes, I'm…. I'm fine, Isaac…. Thank you…."
They smiled at each other and hugged. McKnight stared at them from beneath the debris, his vision blurring. "Blast you…. Overseers…." As the would-be conqueror blanked out, he watched as the heroes exchanged a kiss.
