I do believe I mentioned something about this before, no? Basically, I'm a bored movie geek, so I feel like doing a Top Fifty Countdown! You may feel free to comment, complain, praise, bash, etc. I'm not overly strict with the list - my mind honestly changes all the time. Heck, by the end of this countdown, I may have changed my mind about the #1. But it's certainly legit in a more general sense.
And obviously, I highly recommend every movie on the list. There is no filler here - it was, in fact, really hard to bring it down to only 50 movies.
So, this'll begin later tonight and last about three weeks or so. I'll begin by revealing four at a time, until we get to the Top Ten at which time I turn to one a day.
Enjoy!
SpideyFan914's TOP FIFTY MOVIE COUNTDOWN!!

NUMBER 50:www.imdb.com/title/tt0027977/MODERN TIMES (1936) Yeah, I seem to have left my Modern Times poster at school.... Oops.... It was a really cool poster too, so I hope I get it back! This is one of Chaplin's many masterpieces. Plain and simply, it's about the Tramp as he struggles during the times of the depression. It's a hilariously beautiful movie about maintaining humanity and keeping going. NUMBER 49:www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1975) "What is the ground-speed velocity of the swallow?" "African or European?" That line would make a lot more sense to you if you were familiar with the comic genius that is Monty Python. Don't tell me you don't like British humor until you've seen this movie! There is no holding back. NUMBER 48:www.imdb.com/title/tt0059578/FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) The second of the Dollars Trilogy, this one was simply amazing! And really, The Good the Bad and the Ugly gets so much hype that For a Few Dollars More is usually overlooked. Clint Eastwood was of course great, but what really puts it over the top for me is El Indio, the villain. He's one of those really evil, insane, and cool villains who you will simply never forget. NUMBER 47:www.imdb.com/title/tt0165832/INTERSTATE 60: EPISODES OF THE ROAD What the hell?? How dare I put some obscure DTV movie that's no one's ever heard of!! Clearly, this entire Countdown is completely null and void!! What is wrong with me?? There is no way in HELL that this random movie is better than Monty Python!! I don't care what the director's writing credits are, this is MADNESS!! This is - hey, is that Gary Oldman . . . . ?

NUMBER 46:www.imdb.com/title/tt0053125/NORTH BY NORTHWEST Perhaps Hitchcock's most famous movie next to Psycho, there's really just nothing not to love. It's non-stop adventure, twist after twist - North by Northwest basically invented the formula for action/adventure, except not really 'cause Hitchcock had used that formula before. Regardless, it's a classic for the ages! NUMBER 45:www.imdb.com/title/tt0017925/THE GENERAL When my dad showed me this movie ten years ago, it was my first silent movie, and I still remember how much I enjoyed it. And guess what? IT'S ON NETFLIX INSTANT!!! Hurrah!! After all these years, I finally got to rewatch Buster Keaton's classic, and it's just as great as I remembered! I mean, this was probably the first great adventure comedy, and it's still among the best! NUMBER 44:www.imdb.com/title/tt0044741/IKIRU What would you do if you learned that you only had so many months left to live? Would you accept the end? Would you be happy with the way you've lived to life? These are the questions tackled in Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru. It's one of his masterpieces, for sure. To put in a nutshell, the word "ikiru" means "to live." NUMBER 43:www.imdb.com/title/tt0032138/THE WIZARD OF OZ What is there to say? You can't beat the classics.

NUMBER 42:www.imdb.com/title/tt0018455/SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS (1928) Never heard of it? Somehow, I'm not surprised. This movie was huge when it first came out, but has since gone into obscurity for everyone but film students. Probably the best dramatic silent film, Sunrise shifts between a Noir-esque feel and a romantic comedy like it's nobody's business! About a man who is convinced by his lover to kill his wife, Sunrise shifts seamlessly between a suspenseful thriller and a ridiculously fun movie with not a care in the world. NUMBER 41:www.imdb.com/title/tt0055614/WEST SIDE STORY (1961) Say what you want, West Side Story is an amazing, beautiful movie. Quite the opposite of Sunrise, West Side Story is not silent but is in fact a musical, complete with Steven Sondheim's lyrics, Leonard Bernstein's score, and Robert Wise's over-the-top choreography. But unlike most musicals, this one is more than a mere cheesy romance, as it uses music and dancing even for fight scenes and gang wars. It's more of a dance than a movie, with every scene sucking you in from beginning to end. NUMBER 40:www.imdb.com/title/tt0032553/THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) Is that Adolf Hitler, dancing with a globe? Alas, it is not: It's Adenoid Hynkel, dancing with a globe. As the Nazis pressed onward, America still continued to appease the regime, with only a small fraction of the country (I've heard 10%) in support of entering the war. Charlie Chaplin was in this small fraction. Doing what he knows to do best, Chaplin took on the role of a complete mockery of Hitler and the Nazi Party, as well as that of a Jewish barber just awaking from a twenty-year coma. (Of course, we are assured that any resemblance between the two is purely coincidental.) The Great Dictator opened to much steam and controversy, though Chaplin pointed out that it was also his first talkie, something his peers had been pressing him to do for quite a while. So really, they had nothing to be upset about. NUMBER 39:www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/CITIZEN KANE (1941) Citizen Kane is critically acclaimed as the greatest movie of all time. I, however, have found thirty-eight movies I like better. Still, Welles' masterpiece can not be overlooked. It is, in short, a character study of a complex and intriguing man. Charles Foster Kane is on top of the world. And yet, he's an easier source of pity than envy, if you will even stoop that low. There's really not much to be said here that hasn't been said a thousand times.... except that we still can't seem to agree on who this man is.

NUMBER 38:www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/CASABLANCA (1942) The greatest love story ever told? Quite possibly. You could say it's simply every cliche, but the truth is that Casablanca invented the cliches! And with a cast led by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, where could you go wrong? Besides, "As Time Goes By" is probably the greatest number from a movie - on that, I'm agreeing with Mr. Obama. NUMBER 37:www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) Because it's JUST SO COOL!!!!! "Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was... a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn't like that. Not-one-bit. So - me watching - he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it! Turns to me, and he says, "why so serious, son?" Comes at me with the knife... "Why so serious?" He sticks the blade in my mouth... "Let's put a smile on that face!""NUMBER 36:www.imdb.com/title/tt1049413/UP (2009) When it comes to a movie we've all seen, it's kind of hard to write a decent review. It's a brilliant movie, from beginning to end. I'll admit that Alpha's voice still annoys me, but otherwise it is completely flawless. And of course, Carl Fredrickson is still one of the most well-developed animated characters I've ever seen, with most of his characterization done in the first ten minutes! NUMBER 35:www.imdb.com/title/tt0119698/PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997) I really need to see more of Hayao Miyazaki's work. When my cousin sat me down to watch this movie, I was in no way anticipating just how great it would be. It's not just another war movie where some evil person is plotting to massacre a kinder civilization - both are shown as flawed, and also as understandable. It's actually difficult to pin down just who the "bad guy" is. Everybody wants everything, no?

NUMBER 34:www.imdb.com/title/tt0109445/CLERKS. (1994) It's just another day in the life of two convenience store clerks. No, really, that's the entire movie. Nothing particularly interesting happens, and protagonist Dante never really does anything that will help him get the girl he's after - he mainly just complains and waits and then gets happy when things turn out right and depressed when they don't. Oh yeah, and they also may or may not play hockey on the room, leave work to attend a funeral, talk a lot about sex, and screw with the minds of the customers. Oh, and I won't comment on the slight possibility that necrophilia could potentially come into play. But hey - HE'S NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TODAY!! So, all in a day's work, right? Right? NUMBER 33:www.imdb.com/title/tt0099685/GOODFELLAS (1990) To be honest, I don't usually care much for mobster movies. It's always just a bunch of movies acting like they're untouchable, even though it would be rather easy to pull out a gun and shoot that Don in the head. (Granted, you wouldn't live much longer yourself, but if you're gonna insult him anyway....) Besides, I don't feel like I'm getting any sort of special insight into the criminal underworld, because it's really just however the filmmaker imagines the criminal underworld to be! If you're making a movie about airplane pilots, you can easily ask an airplane pilot what it's like to be an airplane pilot, but if you do the same for a mobster he'll blow your flippin' brains out. And yet, that's exactly what Goodfellas did! Henry Hill is a real-life ex-mobster who just so happened to write a book about his life, and Martin Scorcese just so happened to strike true gold with it! From the brilliant script (probably one of the best scripts of all time) to the precise directing to Joe Pesci's acting, Goodfellas easily surpassed my usual lowly expectations of mobster movies and became an entity all its own. NUMBER 32:www.imdb.com/title/tt0338013/ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004) What if you could forget that a bad relationship ever happened? What if you could wake up one morning, fully healed, without any remember of even meeting the ex-lover? From the mind of Charlie Kaufman, Eternal Sunshine explores the dissolved relationship between Joel and Clementine backwards. Yes, as we enter Joel's mind, we see first the final moments as she stormed out of his life forever and travel back to see when they first met, when they were once in love. NUMBER 31:www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) It holds the world record for the most F-bombs in a single movie, and it's a cult-classic. What more is there to be said? The plot is very simple: A Chinaman pees on "The Dude"'s rug, mistaking him for the wealthy Jeffrey Lebowski with whom he shares a name, and The Dude wants Lebowski to pay him back for it. And there's bowling. Lots and lots of bowling. And I don't know why.

NUMBER 30:www.imdb.com/title/tt0887883/BURN AFTER READING (2008) I don't care how odd a choice it is - Burn After Reading is simply so absurd and random and directionless that it is absolutely brilliant. There is no method to the madness. It's difficult even to pin down which character should be considered the protagonist. This is classic Coen Brothers style, with insanity dripping through every plot and subplot, and no one character ever truly knows exactly what is going on. So what do we learn from all this? I guess we learned not to do it again - hell if I know what we did though. NUMBER 29:www.imdb.com/title/tt0048021/RIFIFI (1955) It is the perfect crime. Several men plot an incorruptible bank heist. It's been years since I've seen this movie, but I still can't forget just how intense it was. The heist scene itself is one of the great moments of cinema, as every moment draws on for what seems to be an eternity, and you hold your breath just waiting for someone to stumble over and alert the neighborhood. It's a classic Noir which deserves far more recognition than it is ever given. NUMBER 28:www.imdb.com/title/tt0072890/DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) What started as a simple bank robbery quickly grew into a national phenomenon. Based on a true story, Dog Day Afternoon focuses on the robber Sonny as he tries to keep a cool head and make it out of this tight spot without raising his hands over his head. Director Sidney Lumet is known for getting brilliant performances out of his actors, and with Al Pacino leading the cast where can you go wrong? It was my avatar for a month for a reason, folks! NUMBER 27:www.imdb.com/title/tt0064115/BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) Something about outlaws is just really cool. They do whatever they want, whenever they want, without any regard for rules or regulations. It's just plain FUN! It's not very easy to beat the freeing feel of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It's simply an adventurous ride, from beginning to end.

NUMBER 26:www.imdb.com/title/tt0053604/THE APARTMENT (1960) Mr. Baxter is a bit of a pushover. When his office superiors come to him asking to use his apartment for their extramarital affairs, he has a hard time saying no. I can find no words to describe just how enjoyable and powerful The Apartment proves to be. It is a comedy, a romance, a drama; it is everything we love about movies. NUMBER 25:www.imdb.com/title/tt0047396/REAR WINDOW (1954) Rear Window was my first Hitchcock film, and ever since I've been a die-hard fan. I forget where I read this, but someone managed to describe perfectly just what it is about Rear Window that is so damn awesome. It's because L.B. Jeffries is just like us, peering into the lives of others. He is looking out his window across the apartment complex to see what his neighbors are doing, much like we are peering into the TV screen to see what L.B. Jeffries is doing. And much like us, he gets excited when something unusual occurs. NUMBER 24:www.imdb.com/title/tt0097576/INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) Indiana Jones is back, and this time he's bringing his father! And not only that, but his father is James Bond! I'm a huge fan of all the Indiana Jones movies, and this one is among the best. It's an adventure which once again pits Indy against the Nazis as they compete to search for the Holy Grail itself. But it's also a story of father and son and Indy and his dad attempt to reconcile for a neglected childhood. Great fun for the whole family! NUMBER 23:www.imdb.com/title/tt1019452/A SERIOUS MAN (2009) "We can't ever really know what's going on." When the Coen Brothers opened their new film A Serious Man, it was received with mixed reviews. Some proclaimed to be brilliant, even the best of the Coens' work. Others did not receive it so pleasantly, finding it frustrating and just plain pretentious. Obviously, seeing as it's in my Top 50, I'm one of the former. Although, I'll admit that when I first saw it, it went over my head as well. On the one hand, this is just another of those philosophical search movies, as Larry Gopnik looks for the answers finding only uncertainty every which way he turns. It examines how we deal with the unknown and what we can (or can't) do about it. But there's more to it than that, as the movie forces you to engage with it, leaving even you out of the loop and challenging you to accept the uncertainty.

NUMBER 22:www.imdb.com/title/tt0266543/FINDING NEMO (2003) Just looking at the pictures makes me want to watch this movie. Is there really anything else to say? In Pixar, nothing is thrown away. Every character serves a purpose, every element is fleshed out. And the animation itself? Beautiful. NUMBER 21:www.imdb.com/title/tt0317705/THE INCREDIBLES (2004) Speaking of Pixar, here's another one. This time they took the superheroes and incorporated a new dimension to the humanizing: The superheroes retired and had kids. Well, I don't think any of you actually haven't seen the movie, so there's not really much I can say. The story is great, the characters are great - hell, even the action's great! And Pixar has certainly proven themselves to be above mere children's animation through incredibly elaborate subtext: For those who were unaware, Helen thought Bob was having an affair with Mirage. NUMBER 20:www.imdb.com/title/tt0080678/THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980) "I AM NOT AN ANIMAL!! I AM A HUMAN BEING!!" Granted, you'd never know it by looking at him. John Merrick is extremely disfigured - if it weren't based on a true story, I'd think his disease impossible. But his mind is fully intact. And he's polite, gentle, would never hurt a soul. And yet he's looked upon as a sideshow freak, mocked and abused. It's a simple and touching story, and we all know I'm a sap for simple and touching stories. NUMBER 19:www.imdb.com/title/tt0058083/FAIL-SAFE (1964) After the recent passing of director Sidney Lumet, I spent a weekend watching several of his most popular movies. After seeing Fail-Safe late one night, I lied down in bed and stared at the ceiling for ten minutes, unable to move or speak at all. Nothing could have possibly prepared me for the sheer breathtaking power of this movie. The plot is similar to a dramatic version of Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, as a technical glitch (supposedly) orders several US planes to head into Russia and drop nuclear missiles on Moscow, while a simultaneous glitch cuts off communications with those planes. It's a million-to-one chance that such a glitch could occur, but here it has, and the government (with Henry Fonda as President) must find a way to stop the planes else nuclear war breaks out. And it's beautiful....

NUMBER 18:www.imdb.com/title/tt0061722/THE GRADUATE (1967) Benjamin Braddock is fresh out college, and is quite confident in his future. Well, actually, no, he has no idea where his future will find him, and he's a little worried. Actually, he's very worried. Actually, he's terrified. And it just keeps coming! The status quo changes every minute, as fate throws everything it's got at poor little Ben. And is he going to stand up for himself? He's going to make his future out to be the way he wants it? Well, if I told you that, you wouldn't need to see the movie, now would you. NUMBER 17:www.imdb.com/title/tt0063522/ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) "I dreamed someone was raping me. I think it was someone inhuman." It may start slow, but mind close attention. Everything you see here has a purpose; every element has a pay-off. Rosemary is pure and innocent, but something devilish is going on in this new apartment, and she fears for the life of her unborn child. And even knowing the twist ending already the first time I saw it, it was stilly captivating and brilliant to watch. Without ever once showing any sorcery on-screen, Roman Polanski has managed to forge perhaps the greatest horror movie of all time. This isn't a dream, my friends - this is really happening. NUMBER 16:www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/PSYCHO (1960) Okay fine, maybe this is the greatest horror movie of all time. It's hard to describe the movie without giving anything away, so I won't say much. This is, of course, the origin of the classic shower murder when the killer stabs a girl in the shower to the music of screeching violins. And when the killer is finally revealed, well let's just say we've got one of the greatest movie villains here. And remember: "A boy's best friend is his mother." NUMBER 15:www.imdb.com/title/tt0075686/ANNIE HALL (1977) Hey, Woody Allen made a masterpiece! There's no other word to describe the sheer joy of watching this brilliantly constructed piece of cinema. Even people who don't like Woody Allen love Annie Hall! It's about, plain and simply, the relationship between Alvy Singer and Annie Hall. And it's funny. It's every type of funny. It's freely flowing and works through it's structure like a stream of consciousness, with consistent pessimistic commentary all throughout. Enter the mind of Woody Allen.

NUMBER 14:www.imdb.com/title/tt0268126/ADAPTATION. (2002) To begin, Adaptation is easily the best movie representation of the writing process. You sit down, try to begin, get up and do something else, struggle, figure something out, realize it sucks, struggle some more, write a little, realize it still sucks, continue to struggle, and so on and so forth. And, when you finally do get something good down, it's just so flippin' weird that you wonder how people will judge you for it. Or else it's just really similar to your actual life and you worry you're going to insult your brother. Or both. But in your heart, you know you've written something good. You just hope that other people agree with you.... NUMBER 13:www.imdb.com/title/tt0275847/LILO & STITCH (2002) Before I was abnormally obsessed with Spider-Man (and believe it or not such a time did, in fact, exist), I was obsessed with Lilo & Stitch. And why the hell not?? It was just such a fun movie, and even has that touch of weirdness which we all know I can appreciate. I'll admit that it's mainly here for nostalgia value, if you in turn admit that Lilo & Stitch was actually really smart for a kid's movie. Besides, I spent way too many hours chasing imaginary Experiments to put this movie any lower! NUMBER 12:www.imdb.com/title/tt0316654/SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004) Hm, looking at the IMDb page, it appears that Spider-Man 2 won an Oscar.... for visual effects.... Oh, who cares, it won an Oscar and that's cool! So just to clarify, I know that Spider-Man 2 is not the greatest movie of all time. But I love it anyway. I'm assuming you do too, or else I really don't know why you're on a website with Spider-Man wallpaper. Basically, I had a hard time deciding whether or not to include by obvious bias toward Spidey on the list. So I ultimately decided that I would include it, but bar it from the Top Ten. Thus, you can guess my number 11 to be.... NUMBER 11:www.imdb.com/title/tt0145487/SPIDER-MAN (2002) Lots of 2002 movies today, huh? Eh, I guess I could go on about how this movie is actually a romance in disguise, but y'know, I think I'll just let the name speak for itself....

NUMBER 10:www.imdb.com/title/tt0044079/STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951)"I beg your pardon, but aren't you Guy Haines?" Two men meet on a train. One has been having trouble trying to divorce his wife. The other despises his father with a passion. And so, the second devises a scheme to solve both their problems, by each one committing the other's murder. The first believes him to be joking, until his wife turns up dead. It's fun and adventurous, suspenseful, even funny at times. Plus, Bruno Anthony is a REALLY cool villain! He has this theory that a man should do everything before he dies, even murder. Needless to say, he's a complete fruitcake. A Hitchcockian thriller at its best, Strangers on a Train is simply one hell of a movie!

NUMBER 9:www.imdb.com/title/tt0036775/DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944)"That was all there was to it. Nothing had slipped, nothing had been overlooked. There was nothing to give us away. And yet, Keyes, as I was walking down the street to the drugstore, suddenly, it came over me that everything would go wrong. It sounds crazy Keyes, but it's true, so help me, I couldn't hear my own footsteps. It was the walk of a dead man." Double indemnity is a clause in life insurance that in the case of an unlikely death, you will receive double the money. It's in there to get more buyers, but of course the accident involved is so rare that it shouldn't cost the insurance company a cent. Unless, of course, the death is not so accidental after all. Walter Neff was in love with Phyllis Dietrichson from the moment he laid eyes on her. The problem, of course, is Mr. Dietrichson. And so, the two devise a scheme to eliminate the problem, and make a hefty prophet while they're at it. But of course, where murder is involved, it's never so simple. From the mind of Billy Wilder, Double Indemnity is one of the quintessential film noirs. It dares to tread an area taboo in those days. Sex? Murder? ADULTERY?? And the protagonist IS the villain? But there is no denying the genius behind the movie! It's thrilling, adventurous, and who doesn't love to tread on taboo-ed territory. It even seemed to be a shoe-in for Best Picture - Double Indemnity was nominated for seven Oscars, but unfortunately failed to actually win any. By the time they got to Best Director, and that other guy won, Billy Wilder opted to stick his foot out and trip the guy as he went down the aisle.

NUMBER 7:www.imdb.com/title/tt0114709/TOY STORY (1995) "That wasn't flying! That was... falling with style!" Well, duh.... I mean, come on! It's Toy Story! It's Pixar's first movie, and remains one of the greatest of all time! It's just.... just.... FUN! Them guys at Pixar know how to tell a story, and they have fun doing it, and it shows! Toy Story is the creme of the crop, an instant classic. It revolutionized movies, for real, with its computer animation. The characters are unforgettable - even the minor ones. What else is there to say?

NUMBER 7:www.imdb.com/title/tt0071315/CHINATOWN (1974) "But, Mrs. Mulwray, I goddamn near lost my nose. And I like it. I like breathing through it. And I still think you're hiding something." Jack Nicholson, one of my favorite actors, and Faye Dunaway, one of my favorite actresses, in a movie by Roman Polanski, one of my favorite directors. Well, this is an easy one. J. J. Gittes, private investigator, is hired by a Mrs. Mulwray to uncover the extramarital affairs of her husband. Except then he finds out that this woman is not the real Mrs. Mulwray. And then Mr. Mulwray turns up dead. And that's only the first half-hour. Chinatown is thrilling and exciting, with enough twists and turns to give Hitchcock a run for his money. There's something dark and brooding beneath the surface here, and Gittes is determined to find out what it is. Nicholson has his A-game on for what is, in my opinion, his best performance! We follow him all the way through, from the humble beginnings to the earth-shattering end. This is a movie you will never forget.
