My guess towards why you're treating this like a big deal is that A) you're actually excited about it and B) it breathes life into this otherwise dead fourm.
(Yes I'm aware that was supposed to be rhetorical).

#50: www.imdb.com/title/tt0038650/IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) Finally saw it this year, and it is indeed a brilliant movie about.... Yeah, you guys have seen this, right? Right. Last Year: N/A#49: www.imdb.com/title/tt0044741/IKIRU (1952) From the director of SEVEN SAMURAI and RASHOMON, it's the tale of a dying man who decides to entirely reshape his life in his final months. An almost Shakespearean fable about what it means "to live," in Japanese, "Ikiru." Last Year: 44#48: www.imdb.com/title/tt0066921/A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) A Stanley Kubrick masterpiece which just barely missed the list last year. Alex DeLarge is a 14-year-old kid who gets his kicks from harrassing the homeless, raping older women, and listening to Ludwig Von Beethoven. But when this lifestyle leads to the accidental murder of the local cat-lady, the government take it upon themselves to strip DeLarge of one last right: free will. Last Year: snub#47: www.imdb.com/title/tt0338013/ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004) How many times have you been in a bad breakup where all you want is to forget that you ever knew the other person? In this backwards romance like no other, now you can! But as naive Joel begins to forget, he encounters one problem: He changes his mind. Last Year: 32

hm, I enjoy It's a Wonderful Life decently enough, but i sure as hell wouldn't place it anywhere near a top 50. the only reason i even like it is because of Jimmy Stewart. no comment on ikiru, since i haven't seen it. or on clockwork orange, since i need to rewatch it. I agree with your placement of Eternal Sunshine though i'm surprised it's fallen this far for you. it's a fantastic film

Mm.... Not really sure that "falling" is the right word here. I mean, the Top 50 is the Top 50 is the Top 50. The difference between 32 and 47 is exactly fifteen movies. Those same fifteen movies were probably duking it out last year as well. Like I explained last year, placement is much less important than actually making the list. Top Ten-Twenty is prob all that's really extra-exceptional. And considering how many movies from last year have been snubbed entirely.... #46: www.imdb.com/title/tt1049413/UP (2009) One of Pixar's emotional rollercoasters - from tearjerking to adventurous to inspiring to hilarious, Up is a sheer classic in every sense of the word. I am honored to have been able to catch this one in theaters! Last Year: 36#45: www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) I watched this movie with a friend, and we finished, I had a very odd reaction: I said, "I get it." And then I explained how he'd been abandoned in space, circle of life, yada-yada. Anyway, this clearly is not a movie for everyone, but anyone who dares compare it to last year's The Tree of Life clearly is missing the point - HINT: One of those movies is contrived gibberish, and the other actually makes you think! Last Year: N/A#44: www.imdb.com/title/tt0075314/TAXI DRIVER (1976) This is the movie that inspired the guy who shot Reagan. He was in love with Jodie Foster, star of the movie, and to get her attention he did exactly what Travis Bickle does to get Cybill Shepard's attention: He tries to kill a politician. Unfortunately for him, Jodie Foster is gay. Poor guy.... Last Year: snub#43: www.imdb.com/title/tt0097576/INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) Sing it with me now: Ba da da DAAA! Ba da daaa! Ba da da DAAA! Ba da DA! DA! DUM!!Last Year: 24

By the way, just to be clear, under "Last Year," if I write "N/A" it means that I only saw the film for the first time in the past year. If I write "snub," it means I'd seen the film but hadn't put it on my Top 50. #42: www.imdb.com/title/tt0027977/MODERN TIMES (1936) We're all familiar with my love for Charlie Chaplin, right? Right. Modern Times has a very simple through-line: it's the Tramp and Paulette Godard against everyone and everything else. As the two struggle to make it by and earn cash, they go a journey through the brink of insanity. Modern Times is, plain and simply, a masterpiece of comedy. Last Year: 50#41: www.imdb.com/title/tt0071360/THE CONVERSATION (1974) Francis Ford Coppola directed this movie in-between work on the legendary movies known as The Godfather Parts I and II. And, in my humble opinion, it is better than both. Gene Hackman gives one of the great all-time performances as an audio surveillance who believes the man he's working for is involved in a murder plot against a young couple. Slow-paced yet irrevocably gripping, The Conversation is a tale of obsession and paranoia rarely ever matched. Last Year: N/A#40: www.imdb.com/title/tt0061418/BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967) They're young. They're in love. They rob banks. Bonnie Parker first meets Clyde Barrow trying to steal her mother's car. She then runs off with him and the rest is a roller-coaster of thrills, laughs, and sheer horror. Frequently cited as a turning point in American cinema, this movie ALSO has Gene Hackman, this time as an angry old lawman! He just keeps on popping up today! Last Year: snub#39: www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/THE SHINING (1980) That's the only picture I could show without giving you nightmares. (Yes, I'm completely exaggerating, but I had to weed down my search to exclude coming across that old lady or I would have nightmares.) The Shining remains the only movie that can still haunt me when I'm trying to get to sleep at night. Sure, some others have jumps and creepy Satanical vampires, but The Shining works on a different level, a nightmarish atmosphere with a touch of surrealism. It doesn't take long before you realize that quite a lot of the movie doesn't make sense - and that's what makes it scary. It's that touch of absurdity, which you could almost call funny. Almost. Last Year: snub

#38: www.imdb.com/title/tt0078748/ALIEN (1979) A rare case of a movie which lives up to its hype. Ridley Scott managed to get this made through a pitch of "JAWS in space." That's basically what it is, except far more horrifying. I mean, just look at those mouths - THEY HAVE MOUTHS INSIDE OF MOUTHS!!!! That's awesome! Last Year: N/A#37: www.imdb.com/title/tt0034583/CASABLANCA (1942) Because, no matter how much things may change, I am still a sappy romantic. Humphrey Bogart gives perhaps the finest performance of his career (a huge compliment, considering he's one of my all-time favorites) in this beautiful masterpiece classic. Last Year: 38#36: www.imdb.com/title/tt0361748/INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS (2009) Because who needs romanticism when you have Basterds?? The plot is very simple: A mythologized unit of Nazi-killers plot to infiltrate a movie screening and kill Hitler. Meanwhile, the theater's owner whose secretly Jewish also plots to kill Hitler. Meanwhile, the Nazi who killed her family does a whole bunch of stuff while being one of the coolest villains to grace the silver screen. All in all, it's an incredibly convoluted World War II movie which entirely redefines the genre. Last Year: snub#35: www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) I cannot sum up this film in a paragraph while doing it an ounce of justice. Last Year: 31

All of today's films are ones I've seen for the first time in the past year. I swear, it's just a coincidence. #34: www.imdb.com/title/tt0457430/PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) Of course the guy who did Heroes and Villains would love this movie. It's a fantasy about a little girl, fairy tales, princesses, and brutal war-mongerers. A dark fantasy. Very dark. At times frightening, and constantly gripping. Last Year: N/A#33: www.imdb.com/title/tt0039631/MONSIEUR VERDOUX (1947) Charlie Chaplin's last film before getting falsely accused of being a Communist and kicked out of the country perfectly explains why he was falsely accused of being a Communist and kicked out of the country. See, his movies had been getting increasingly controversial for a while - they used to be simple romantic comedies, but he became more satirical with Modern Times, and even more controversial with The Great Dictator (he dared suggest we should declare war against Germany), and now with this one, he plays a polite and sympathetic serial killer. He's not like Sylar though, or even Dexter - we are completely and totally rooting for him, as though Verdoux is one hundred percent in the right. After all, in his own words, "One murder make a villain. Millions, a hero. Numbers sanctify." Last Year: N/A#32 www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/SPIRITED AWAY (2001) Another fantasy, except this one far more ingrained in the child's imagination. It's something of a masterpiece - the art, the story, everything about it gives the feel of a modern-day fairy tale. Last Year: N/A#31: www.imdb.com/title/tt0105236/RESERVOIR DOGS (1992) The opening scene has nothing to do with the rest of the movie. Half the cast is dead or dying from the start. And one of them is a mole for the cops. It's a classic "Whodunnit?" turned on its heads, as you try to figure which criminal is secretly straight. One twist after another, Tarantino's first and perhaps greatest film set him down as a force to be reckoned with. Last Year: N/A

#30 www.imdb.com/title/tt0099685/GOODFELLAS (1990) I'm not a huge fan of mobster movies or anything, but if all mobster movies were like this one I would be. Non-stop kickass enjoyment, with never a dull moment - that's Goodfellas. Last Year: 33#29: www.imdb.com/title/tt0100998/DREAMS (1990) Akira Kurosawa's Dreams is in no way a typical movie. In fact, it's a collection of eight or nine shorts, all written and directed by the Japanese Shakespeare himself, based off dreams he actually had. It's more of a spiritual journey than anything, through love, guilt, mass tragedy, and sheer happiness. Dreams also has by far the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen - a visual masterpiece. Last Year: N/A#28: www.imdb.com/title/tt0074958/NETWORK (1976) Before there was The Freakin' Social Network, there was a far superior movie - known simply as Network. A news anchor gone mad prophet, a show-runner whose whole life revolves around ratings, and all of the greatest movie monologues from perhaps the greatest screenplay ever written. That's Network. Last Year: snub#27: www.imdb.com/title/tt0137523/FIGHT CLUB (1999) Both the first and second rules of Fight Club forbid from telling you anything about it. But I'm sure you've heard of it. Last Year: N/A

#26: www.imdb.com/title/tt0032553/THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) The final monologue here is the other greatest movie monologue. A bold statement and a hilarious movie, Chaplin's first talkie is a treasure for worship. Last Year: 40#25: www.imdb.com/title/tt0033870/THE MALTESE FALCON (1941) If you can go too long without a rewatch, you can forget how gripping a movie it is. The Maltese Falcon is one of the movies that started the Film Noir genre, and remains one of the best. Humphrey Bogart brings his A-game as Sam Spade - and for Humphrey Bogart to bring his A-game is to imply that you're in for a wild ride. Last Year: snub#24: www.imdb.com/title/tt0246578/DONNIE DARKO (2001) It doesn't really matter what this film's about. What it's really about is a troubled boy trying to make sense of the world before it comes to an end. Every scene is a journey, an offering of some new philosophy on how the world works. I think my favorite bit is "Cellar Door." "Some famous linguist once said that of all the possible combinations of words, those are the most beautiful." I still don't know if that's even true. Last Year: N/A#23: www.imdb.com/title/tt0053604/THE APARTMENT (1960) We are all, by now, familiar with my love of Billy Wilder. The Apartment is no exception. An enjoyable, moving, and beautiful movie, with great performances, brilliant writing - I cannot find any fault whatsoever with The Apartment. It is not ever year you get a movie this good. Last Year: 26

#22: www.imdb.com/title/tt0064115/BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) Hands-down the greatest western of all time. Except unlike most westerns, this one isn't about the cowboy hero - it's about a couple of bandits on the run. Butch is the mastermind brains of the group and Sundance is the fastest gun there is. But after robbing the wrong rich guy, they wind up with a slew of the best bounty hunters on their trail, and from their it's a wild roller coaster ride of action, adventure, and some great witty back-and-forth! Last Year: 27#21: www.imdb.com/title/tt0047396/REAR WINDOW (1954) Surprised there haven't been any Hitchcock yet? Never fear, loyal followers! Rear Window is a classic to be remembered forever! On the topic of voyeurism, it is art. On the subject of entertainment, it is pure. Complete with lead stars James Stewart and Grace Kelly. Brilliance at its finest. Last Year: 25#20: www.imdb.com/title/tt0072890/DOG DAY AFTERNOON (1975) A simple bank robbery, simply gone horribly wrong. Based off an actual tale of media frenzy and police overreaction, Dog Day Afternoon marks Pacino with one of the greatest all-time performances, and a script of perfection. Last Year: 20#19: www.imdb.com/title/tt0101410/BARTON FINK (1991) Another Coen Brothers movie, Barton Fink is about a playwright brought to Hollywood to write a wrestling B-movie. Except he knows nothing about wrestling and nothing about writing movies. And then things get weird. Really weird. Last Year: N/A

18: www.imdb.com/title/tt0317705/THE INCREDIBLES (2004) Incredibles, ASSEMBLE! No? Okay, whatever. It's awesome, funny, yada-yada Pixar fanboy yada-yada.... Last Year: 2117: www.imdb.com/title/tt0036775/DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) I had a rather long-winded summary for this one last year. In short, it's still amazing, and here's one scene to describe Wilder's mastery: After one little mishap, Fred McMurray gather into a getaway car and drive off (I won't tell you why). A simple scene, and yet after wrapping Billy Wilder felt like something was missing. And then, on a whim, he holds everything, gets the actors and camera back into their places. Piled back into the getaway car, Wilder tells his actors, "Do the same thing again. Except this time, the car won't start at first. You have to struggle." Last Year: 9#16: www.imdb.com/title/tt0109445/CLERKS. (1994) Don't try to deny it. This movie totally deserves this high a ranking. Not only is it funny, but it also has a message - I'm just not entirely sure what that message is. Besides, it's probably the most realistic depiction of the everyman on the silver screen. Somehow. Last Year: 34#15: www.imdb.com/title/tt0042876/RASHOMON (1950) A deep look into the nature of man, Rashomon is easily the best work of Akira Kurosawa - and that is saying a lot. He's best known for his samurai movies, though his more domestic dramas have sometimes been called better, Rashomon perfectly combines the elements. It is a samurai film, but only on the very surface - action takes background to the questions being asked, and the unique plot structure. The same story is told four times, each from a different perspective and each completely different. The only explanation: Everyone is lying. Last Year: 6

#14: www.imdb.com/title/tt0063522/ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse have moved into a new apartment, anticipating the birth of their first child. It's a nice apartment aside from some weird old neighbors who are perhaps too friendly. Only Rosemary is suspicious of the neighbors: She believes they're witches. A horror classic from the brilliant director Roman Polanski. Last Year: 17#13: www.imdb.com/title/tt0044079/STRANGERS ON A TRAIN (1951) Another Hitchcockian masterpiece, Strangers on a Train pits pro-tennis player Guy Haines against the diabolically Freudian Bruno Antony, who has killed Guy's wife and expects him to return the favor of killing Bruno's father. Thrill, humor, and the works - it's everything that makes us love Hitchcock! Last Year: 10#12: www.imdb.com/title/tt0316654/SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004) Oh, please. Of course these are on the list! To honor tradition, I'm placing my clear biases right outside the Top Ten. I mean, come on, it was after seeing this movie that I bought my first comics - by no means a coincidence. Last Year: 12#11: www.imdb.com/title/tt0145487/SPIDER-MAN (2002) And this is the movie which first sparked my interest in superheroes, and Spider-Man. Did I tell you guys the one where I never wanted to see this movie, and it was my sister's idea to watch it? Funny how that turned out.... So, I should probably pose the question of whether the new movie is going to be as good. Mm, it could be I suppose, though it'll take a lot to overcome the nostalgia factor (granted, TSSM did exactly that to Spider-Man TAS). I'm definitely really looking forward to it, but I highly doubt it will overshadow The Avengers for this year. Last Year: 11NEXT: TOP TEN

Psycho is a classic horror film, with some brilliantly creepy twists (okay, maybe if you see it for the first time when you're eighteen, you'll see it coming, but when I saw it I was shocked). And besides, there's always room for one more Hitchcock. Last Year: 16

And from there, he decides to turn his life around: he can be whatever he wants, regardless of the cost to those around him since, let's face it, they don't really care anyway. #8:![](http://www.insidethemagic.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/toy4.jpg) ![](http://www.chud.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/toy-story.jpg) www.imdb.com/title/tt0114709/"You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity." -Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen)TOY STORY (1995) Pixar never disappoints, not even in their maiden voyage. A revolution of animation, and even though I honestly prefer old-fashioned hand-drawn 2D animation, the stories Pixar tells are simply remarkable. Each Pixar film is packed with more heart than any live-action movie of the past twenty years, and Toy Story is perhaps their greatest creation. It's a parody of basically every genre, a mockery of ambition, and a genuinely exciting, funny, and brilliant adventure. Also, when Buzz finds out he's a toy.... Well, I recently realized that that's kind of the ultimate castration. Far more scarring than anything The Matrix ever dished out. Last Year: 8
