(This is something I worked on a while ago, just the first chapters, but if anyone wants to read it.)
“Thank you sir and have a good day!” Megan said with a little acting in her voice as an older man, probably on his way to work, walks out of the place with a cup of coffee. Megan Reeves was about twenty-three years old, had dark-brown hair that was about shoulder length, and had a beautiful face on her. However, she worked at a counter inside a coffee shop. She wasn’t the happiest girl in the world. She had bigger plans than this. She wanted to meet someone, have a family, and live a wonderful life. But so far, any guy she’s ever met she wanted to kill. She never went to college, after high school, she decided she couldn’t take any more of that life.
She’s been working at Fancy Joe’s coffee shop for three years now. Her friends tell her she needs to move on, but since her parents died, who were never good at handling money, she hasn’t stopped working. She works here, and occasionally at a beauty parlor where she fills in for someone who can’t make it.
It’s about 9:00 in the morning. A man walks in about 6 feet tall; he had a clean shaved face, short black hair. And a scar that stretched from the top of the left side of his face, all the way down to his chin. The whole left side was somewhat deformed.
“Hello, sir, can I…I…help you?” She stuttered when she saw his face.
“Can I have a small black coffee, no cream, and two sugars?” He said. His voice was deep and rugged.
“Yeah, let me get that for you.” Megan says has she walks back to grab a cup. She fills it black coffee, caffeinated. She grabs to sugar packets, rips the tops, and pours it in. She stirs up the sugars with a spoon, and hands it to the customer, who lays two one dollar bills on the counter.
“I have to say, you look quite beautiful” the deep, rugged voice sent chills down Megan’s spine. Inside she was thinking, “Wish I could say the same for you.” But all she replied with was, “Thanks, your very kind.”
The man smiles, but when his right side smiles, the scarred side frowns. Megan smiles back at him, sarcastically. The man left with a smirk on his face. Megan sat down on her small wooden stool that was nearby. She ran her fingers through her hair. The look on her face was pure stress.
Later that afternoon, Megan was lying on the couch, just crashed. Standing in the room were her three friends from high school. One was Jason Harrison; he was the quarterback for their high school team, was almost twenty-four years old. He was tall, brown hair, and has known Megan for quite a while. The other guy was Jason’s best bud, Lamar Johnson, his favorite target on the football field. He had a Black fade, was also twenty-four, and was just a little shorter than Jason. The other friend was a girl, Megan’s best friend Sarah Bay. She was about the same height as Megan, which was about average for a girl; she was twenty-one years old and she had blonde hair.
“You know if you are so tired of working there, just quit? There’s no point in working there if all it does is stress you out.” Jason asks.
Megan mumbles something into her pillow she was laying on.
“What?” Jason asks.
Megan lifts her head, “I need that job! Have you seen the house I have? Thanks to my parents not being careful in saving money, I have to work to keep up the payments.”
“Why not sell it?” Lamar asks.
“Because it’s the only thing I have left of them.” She replies.
Jason sighs, “Anyone wants sandwiches?!” he says breaking the awkward silence.
“I’m just going to go lie down.” Megan says.
“You are…” Lamar says back.
Megan looks back up and stares at them. Lamar just gives her a ‘What?’ look. She gets up from the couch, walks up the stairs, and closes her bedroom door before jumping on the bed, and lying down on it.
“You guys are no help!” Sarah says.
“Hey, what do you expect from a couple of jocks?” Lamar asks
“I can tell you I don’t expect any more than I used to.” She replies.
“If she ain’t going to come out, then I’m going to go to that movie.” Jason says.
Sarah rolls her eyes, “Just go guys, maybe she just needs a girl-to-girl talk.”
“Okay, let us know how it goes, we may not act like we care, but we do.”
“I know, I know...have fun!”
“Thanks, come on, L.J.” He looks around after putting on his jacket, “Sarah, where’s L.J.?”
“I’m coming!” Lamar says. After a few seconds he comes running out holding a roast beef sandwich with a few bites taken out of it.
“Lamar, we were going to eat at the movie.”
“I hate movie snacks.” He says with a disgusting face before taking another bite out of his sandwich.
Jason shakes his head as he walks outside, followed by Lamar. “See ya, guys!” Sarah Says. She walks up the stairs, and knocks on Megan’s bedroom door. Megan opens it; Sarah walks in, and sits down on her bed next to her.
Lamar gets into their car, while Jason is approached by one of the neighbors. She lived in a small neighborhood. The houses weren’t close together at all, but you could still see the other houses during the daytime. But at night, unless they had lights on, it was like you were alone out there.
“Hey, Jason”
“Hey…do I know you?”
The man laughs, “No, I am one of Megan’s neighbors, we talk occasionally, and she’s mentioned you a few times, I see you around and put name to face and all.”
“Oh, I see, so you’re the stalker neighbor of the place.”
Both let out a small chuckle, kind of an uncomfortable laugh by both. “Nah, I just saw Megan was a little sad when she came home, and wanted to see how she was doing.”
“She’s just a little stressed from work”
“Aw, poor girl…I know how she feels though, it sure gets to you.”
“Yeah, but she’ll be fine. I hate to go like this, but Lamar and I have a movie to catch.”
“Oh, so he’s Lamar.” He says, and then waves to him while smiling. Lamar just gives a confused look, before lifting his hand up.
“Enjoy your day.” The neighbor says, “I’m Jim by the way.” He says while he offers a hand shake.
“Yeah, you too…” Jason says reluctantly before shaking his hand. He gets into his car with Lamar and drives off.
“What was that about?” Lamar asks.
“I don’t know, but that guy gives me the creeps.”
“Why did he wave at me?”
“Maybe he thinks you’re cute.”
“That’s not funny…” He says while Jason laughs to himself.
Right after they drive off, Jim looks back at Megan’s house, and walks back to his house, watching the road to make sure the two guys didn’t see him.
