The Fear
“I’m sorry…please…just talk to me”
6’1, hair was brown that slightly spiked up from his hand running through it from the stress. 28 year old Jesse Valentine held his IPhone to his ear, in a closet away from the New Year’s Party. He slide to the floor
“Pissed? Why? I don’t understand”
CLICK!
Jesse looks at the screen, it reads “CALL ENDED” Jesse puts the phone down and lets it the emotion hit him. Water forms in his eyes; he hits the back of the closet as hard as he can. He hits it again when the door swings open; standing there is Zack, Black hair that went past his ears. Black suit with no jacket on, he held two glasses of champagne in his left hand. He smiles until he sees the tears
“Where is she?”
“She said it’s over…”
“Damn dude...Well you know damn well I can’t tell you to get over her. Because you’ve known her your whole life. Maybe this whole friends-in-a-relationship stuff shouldn’t have happened. It’s best you just enjoy the party and worry about that next year”
Jesse got up, Zack hands him a glass, Jesse smiles as he takes it
“Enjoy the party…enjoy it!”
“Okay, I’ll try”
“Nope, that’s not good enough. You’re not leaving until you say it like I want to hear it”
“I promise to enjoy the party; can I get out of the closet now?”
“I don’t know…can you?”
Jesse pushes past Zack, Zack smiles, talking to himself
“Yeah, He’ll be fine”
-10:35 PM-
Jesse scrolls through his texts on his phone with a beer in his hands, standing near the window where people can be seen out on Time Square, partying.
“I’ve been given specific instructions to take your phone away”
Jesse looks over and standing there is Blake. 17 year old with brown curly hair wearing a baby blue jacket with a suit underneath it. Jesse smiles, putting his arm around him
“How’ve you been kid?”
“Nope, I’m not letting you change the subject”
Blake held his hand out, Jesse sighs placing the phone in his hand
“Break it and I’m taking that 360 of yours”
“Yeah Yeah”
Blake walks off, Jesse sighs and smiles
-11:20 PM-
Jesse stared over the living room where a small stage was set up from a local band played the some music.
“This song is called The Archers Bows Are Broken…3..2..1”
The drums start the song with a nonstop beat, one after the other at a quick pace while the guitar had a soft but rock-ish tone to it. as if the story was being told through it
“Who do you carry the torch for, my young man?
Do you believe in anything?
Do you carry it around just to burn things down?
Meet me tonight on the turnpike, my darling
Cause we believe in everything
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown
So we strap ourselves up to this engine now
With a God that we found, laying under the backseat…
What did you learn tonight?
You’re shouting so loud you barely enjoy this broken thing
You’re a voice that never sings, is what I say
You were freezing over hell
You were bringing on the end, you do so well
You can only blame yourself, it's what I say”
Jesse looked over from the band to the front door where she walked in, sh wasn't alone, she was holding another man’s hand. He looked down, striken with an undescrible feeling or guilt, sadness and topped with anger and walked up to Zack. Pulling him aside
“What the hell? You invited her?”
“No, well yeah I did”
“How long after our conversation near the closet?”
“5 minutes after”
Jesse walks off
“Jesse wait!...Jesse!”
Jesse walks through the kitchen to get to the exit doors, Zack follows, grabbing Jesse’s arm, Jesse jerks away and turns toward him
“I’m sorry; I invited her because I thought you two could talk it out. Maybe fix it…I was looking out for you”
“Zack, I’ve known you for 13 years. I’ve always known you had a crush on her…you invited her…probably so you could bang her”
“Hi Jesse”
Jesse hears her voice, he turns around. Sarah Bridges. A 26 year old woman that looked like a model, long brown hair, brown eyes with mocha skin and a tattoo on her wrist that reads ‘Love’. She was beautiful and amazing
“Hey Sarah”
“Sar…”
A man walks up and grabs her hand, holding it with a drink in his other. He was 6’1, looked like a football player with brown hair that was combed back and spikey. Wearing a blue sweater and dark brown kakis, Jesse stares at the date, the man stares at him
“You must be Jesse, Sarah told me a lot about you”
Jesse shakes his hand, it was weak, a shake that felt as if he knew several others thing he could be doing with that hand. Like punching this guy in the face
“I’m Terrence”
“I’m sure you’re a great guy but I’m doing all I can right now…punching you and my suppose best friend in the face. Goodbye”
Jesse walks off, Terrence looks at Sarah, and Jesse exits the apartment into the hall where Sarah follows
“Jesse!”
Jesse stops, Sarah walks up to him
“What’s your problem?”
She asks, Jesse smiles turning toward her
“My problem? What’s my problem? What’s your problem? You break up with me not even 2 hours ago and you come here when you damn well knew I was here and bring a date that thinks we’ve never dated. So I’m sorry if I’m a little pissed at the fact my girlfriend cheated on me with a guy who look like he should be on 'Entourage'. So I’m not the problem…you are!”
Jesse turns away when she gets In front of him
“You know your problem…your afraid, you have a fear of commitment and..and love..when I saw you were giving up on our relationship, I gave up on you”
“Afraid of commitment?”
Jesse smiles but there’s something to the smile that gives a sad vibe
“I was going to purpose to you tomorrow…but now…now I hope you rot in hell”
He takes out the box and throws it on the ground, it snaps open as he walks off. The ring shines bright even in the dimly lit hall. She stares down at it in awe but also in sadness. Jesse walks down the hall when he stops and sees smoke exiting from underneath one door. He opens the door where a group of people are circled around a bong. Smoke fills the room
“Hell yeah”
Jesse walks in and closes the door behind him
