alrighty, first off, HAPPY NEW YEARS! second, i guess it's time for a new years update. so, on Jan 10 i'll start my last class i'll ever take as an undergrad, political science. yeah, woohoo. the class lasts two weeks, and on January 21, as soon as my final exam is over, i'll be officially graduated from college! yay! after that, I got a job at Hardee's, so i'll be working there until i start teaching in the fall. Not sure where yet, already got my application in somewhere where i hope to teach, i'll find out in late January if i get the job or not. In my off time i'll be writing stuff, i posted the list a couple weeks back what i want to do, the only change is that there is no Christmas issue of WDC cause my computer messed up and i couldn't write it, so oh well. i plan to start arc 4 this week, i'll let you know when i get it finished. Also, I downloaded and read the entire series of Powers by Brian Michael Bendis this week, damn awesome read, got through all 73 issues in only 3 days. I've posted links to arcs 1-5 in the general forum, it'll be hard to miss there, lol. definitely recommended, it's freakin amazing. i hope to buy some of the TPBs or HCs soon. and finally, bought the Ultimate Spider-Man collection for 15 dollars yesterday, it's a Hardcover collection of the first 7 arcs of USM, so issues 1-39. can't wait to get it, i've been wanting to reread USM but i wanted to have the actual copy and not just a download, so i'm excited. that's pretty much it for now. later guys!

here are my personal selections for awards for movies made in 2011. first up though, a ranking of every film I've seen made in 2011. any film not on this list was obviously not eligible for nomination
1. Drive 2. Hugo 3. Super 8 4. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 5. 50/50 6. Take Shelter 7. Midnight in Paris 8. Source Code 9. Courageous 10. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol 11. Rise of the Planet of the Apes 12. Ides of March 13. Hesher 14. Attack the Block 15. Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 16. Captain America 17. Adventures of TinTin 18. Puncture 19. Another Earth 20. Moneyball 21. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows 22. Friends with Benefits 23. Hanna 24. Horrible Bosses 25. Thor 26. Cowboys and Aliens 27. X-Men: First Class 28. Unknown 29. The Rum Diary 30. Green Hornet 31. Tabloid 32. Green Lantern 33. Rango
Best Visual Effects: Captain America Hugo Rise of Planet of the Apes Super 8 Source Code
Though it's true that the effects in Rise of Planet of the Apes are nothing short of brilliant, especially those involving Cesar, i think that the way Scorsese used the 3D in Hugo (and i'm about as anti-3D as you can get) was just breathtaking and amazing. was tempted to include Take Shelter over Source Code, but other than the first three listed, no movie's effects blew me away this year.
Best Cinematography: Drive Hugo Take Shelter Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo, Take Shelter, and Extremely Loud all have some really striking cinematography, but one of the biggest reason Drive works is the brilliant cinematography that is just striking and makes the movie (predicated on music and atmosphere rather than dialogue) just a joy to watch.
Best Score: Drive Hugo Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Hanna Adventures of TinTin
Technically speaking, Drive has more of a soundtrack than a score, but it's just amazing and sets the mood perfectly. runner up would be Hanna. very cool and fun score that added intensity to a somewhat otherwise pedestrian film.
Best Supporting Actress: Elle Fanning (Super 8 ) Chloe Moretz (Hugo) Anna Kendrick (50/50) Jessica Chastain (Take Shelter) Haley Atwell (Captain America)
This category was a little harder to fill out than i counted on. Anna and Haley add very convincing love interests in their films, maintaining charm and humour and doing a great job adding just a bit extra. Jessica Chastain was brilliant in take shelter, but over 6 months since i first saw Elle Fanning's performance, i'm still amazed by just how awesome she was. A magnetizing screen prescence at just 13 years old, she deserved at least a nomination at this years oscars. (i cannot comment on anyone from the Help, as i have yet to see it)
Best Supporting Actor: Albert Brooks (Drive) Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Andy Serkis (Rise of Planet of the Apes) Jonah Hill (Moneyball) Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Ides of March)
Many great performances this year by supporting actors, Jonah Hill is someone who i tend to actively hate in films, and yet i really enjoyed his performance in Moneyball as i found it both charming and funny, and Albert Brooks plays a great friendly antagonist in Drive. Serkis was brilliant with the motion capture, as he was in LOTR playing gollum. But i had to give it to Max von Sydow for his endearing and fascinating turn as the mute "Renter" who helps to get young Oskar out of his Schell (lame pun i know). It's extremely difficult to play a role as a mute, but he was great.
Best Actress: Rooney Mara (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) Sairse Ronan (Hanna)
Ronan was pretty fascinating in Hanna, but other than her no one really deserved a nomination, and no one came close to touching Rooney Mara's vulnerable yet determined computer hacker who isn't afraid to stand up for herself. She carries the film and was by far the best actress performance i've seen from last year.
Best Actor: Thomas Horn (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50) Ryan Gosling (Drive) Brad Pitt (Moneyball)
I could go on at length about any of these great acting performance but i'll focus on Thomas Horn in Extremely Loud and Incredibly close, because he shows a vulnerability and a sensitivity that absolutely stirs you and carries the film. with a lesser actor, the film would fall very flat, but Horn turns in the best acting job by a child since Haley Joel Osment in the 6th Sense. Still, i can't help but give the award to Michael Shannon for his role as a man tormented by visions of a coming apocalyptic storm, struggling to figure out if he's going crazy or if he is actually seeing the future. One of the best performances i've seen in years.
Best Director: Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) Martin Scorsese (Hugo) Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) David Fincher (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo)
Both Scorsese and Daldry did amazing jobs in their respective movies, Daldry with some interesting visuals to accentuate the phobias of EL and IC's main characters, and Scorsese brilliantly blending the usual horrible 3Dinto the storyline so that it only added to the already brilliant film. But of all the films this year, the one that relied most heavily on shot selection and directorial decisions was Drive, and Refn's direction was flawless. Scorsese is my 2nd favorite director of all time, but Refn definitely earned the award for his work in Drive.
Best Picture: Drive Hugo Super 8 Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 50/50 Take Shelter Midnight in Paris
All the films listed above (my top 7 for the year) are amazing in different ways. EL&IC and 50/50 are both very emotional films, Midnight in paris is a wonderful comedy, Hugo is one of the most fascinating cinematic experiences i've ever sat through, Take Shelter was a gripping drama, and Super 8 was probably the most fun experience i've had at the movies. But Drive is so brilliant that i can't help but give the award for best picture to it. It's a neo-noir that rarely devolves into violence, but when it does it's quick and brutal and shocking. The dialogue is toned down, almost as little as possible put into the film. it relies on the camerawork, the music, and the ability of the actors to communicate to the viewer without saying a thing, and each of those things is nearly pitch perfect.
