I opened my eyes. All I could see was that I was in the woods and the only one awake. I brushed my long brown hair from my eyes and stood up. Wondering why I was in the woods? I'm a half-breed, yes, I said breed. Oh, you don't know? Must be new. A half-breed is something the government created. They had the strange idea to put animal genes into humans, but the thing was, there were some side effects. I now change into a half jaguar when I get angry or if I try hard or if I‘m in danger. Anyway, I walked over to the campfire and started to poke it with a pointed stick. I missed my home. The last thing I remember was sleep walking and stepped in front of a mirror; I jumped at my own reflection. Then, my cat ran by in my room. Something took over me, maybe my instincts? But when I blinked, I had already attacked my cat and hand blood dripping from my newly formed fangs. “Guys get up, I can sense one of them.” I told the group. By group I mean the five of us: Me, Isabelle, James, William, and Opal. “Guys. We need to go.” No one moved. For the past few days I started being able to see into the future and act on it. I walked over to James, he had “shifted”. Being half gorilla was hard on thirteen year old. “James, dude.” “Henry, you’re just paranoid.” he told me half awake. “Wait,” he sniffs the air. “ You’re right. Everyone wake up!” Everyone rose up. Of course, it works when he did it. “Someone is coming, or something.” Silence fell onto the group, no one dared to speak. Ever since the Civil War, the “normies” and the “shifters” were at war. They hunted us, well, like animals. My arms tensed and I could feel my fangs, again. My nose started to form like a jaguars’ along with my senses growing stronger. A dark haired teenager stood up, “Please no. I don’t want to again.” she groaned. This was Opal, a fifteen year old “shifter”. She could be fun, when she was her. Otherwise, she was… deadly. She had spider genes inside her. After she got done talking, she fell to her knees. Before I knew it, she had sprouted spider legs from her back. Last time we were confronted, she sliced right through a man with them. “It’s fine, Opal. You’re beautiful.” I tried to comfort her. Being fifteen was hard enough and now she’s half spider. “Thanks, Henry.” she replied. You could call me the leader of the group. I found James running around New York the first time he shifted and we’ve been friends ever since; the others just kind of grew on us. Isabelle and William stood up together. They were… together… like dating. It got awkward at first, but we learned to get used to it. They were both shifters, too. “William, just go take care of them.” Isabelle groaned. She was a daddies girl until he disowned her for being different. William, no one dare to ask. He has a dark personality; kinda strange, him having angel wings and all. “Shut up, now, Isabelle.” he commanded. “Uh!” she screamed. “He’s right. Be quiet.” I interjected. Something was coming and it scared me. Before I could blink, a large redneck came from behind a tree with a loaded laser cross bow. Society has over the last hundred years, 2102 is a hell of a year. Back to the hunter, he didn’t look like much, neither did a rabbit before the government made it a carnivore. “Well, a couple of shifters huh? Meet my laser bow, you two should be friends!” he shouted. Something was wrong with his ammo though. It was some kinda plasma arrow, but even weirder, James caught it. He had shifted completely; he looked like some kinda of infected gorilla. He had sharpened bones coming from his new gorilla arms. I’d never seen him this transformed. His whole body looked like a grown gorilla except for the pointed teeth and red eyes. “Get him, James.” I told him. He lunged in the hunter’s direction and lifted him in the air. “James! Don’t kill him! He’s human!” I yelled. Even though we were being hunted, I still didn’t like to kill. He listened, but not the way I wanted. He broke his arm and through the hunter into a nearby tree. “Gosh, you big freak. That really hurt, but the Enforcers are already on their way!” he announced. The Enforcers are the government. They are scared of us, shifters, of overpowering the humans. “Guys, we gotta go now!” I began to run. The others followed, I could hear their footsteps behind me. I was heading to the only place I knew was prolly still safe, New York, New York.
