"Normal". Chapter One: Velix Exitium.
My name is Zane. This world is facing a disaster no one could’ve ever seen coming. And they say I’m the reason for all of it. And I stand here. And I remember. I try to figure out how this could’ve happened, who I can blame for it, and why I’m here. But mostly, I’m trying to see her face one more time.
I can remember who I was before. I was an awkward and unusual kid. Everyone has a power. Everyone had some sort of ability that sets them apart. Some people can fly, others can shapeshift. Everyone had a power. Everyone but me. The nice ones avoided. The others insulted me. The person who tormented me the most was a boy named Exercitus, or Exer for short. He could channel his strength to massive proportions. And as with all stereotypical strongmen, he was an asshole of the highest caliber. In fact, he’s where my story begins.
“I have to get it back Zane. I have to!” these were the words that began the spiral into this tragedy. They were spoken by Nicholas, my best and only friend at our Academy of Control. He was a brash young man with the power to control technology, not well unfortunately. “It can’t be worth it, Nicholas. He’ll beat you to a pulp before he gives it back.” I replied. “You don’t understand, Zane. It was my mother’s. I have to get it back.” Nick said. “I……I see. Go fight for it.” Before I could finish this sentence, Nicholas was already running for Exer, who was the one who had taken Nick’s mother’s necklace. Soon a crowd formed, and I walked over to make sure he was okay. All I heard was the breaking of teeth and the sounds of punches. Nick fell to the floor next to me, and I picked him up and turned to see his assaulter. Exer stood there, with his girlfriend Forma with him. She was beautiful, with the power to read minds. I had loved her for as long as I could remember. It wasn’t her choice to be Exer’s companion. Rather, he forced her under threat of death. He abuses her often, and I hate watching it. “Alright Exer. Enough! He just wants his mom’s necklace back.” I yelled. “Yeah, and what’re YOU gonna do about it, NORMIE?!” he yelled at me. All I heard after that was the chanting of the people surrounding me. “FIGHT! FIGHT FIGHT!” Before I knew it, I was pushed toward Exer and it began. “First I’ll put you in your place, then I’ll sell this stupid trinket at the shop.” That was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt a powerful rage burn inside of me, I took my glasses off and held them in my hand. “Tell you what Normie. I’ll let you get the first punch.” In my anger, I crushed my glasses in my hand. My eyes burned, some people tell me that they had even changed from their normal dark blue to a fiery red. I punched Exer clear across the face, and knocked him down. I leapt onto him and began beating him to a pulp. I didn’t stop. I continued to hit him, left, right, left, right, left, right. Then I grabbed him by the neck, and lifted him with one hand. Then from the crowd I heard “oh my god, look at his hands! HIS HANDS!” I stopped beating Exer to look at my own hands, and saw they were glowing with fire that burned a bright purple. They burned Exer’s neck and would not go out. “Enough. Please. Have mercy! I’ll do anything.” He cried. “Give me Nick’s necklace, and leave Forma alone. If I hear you hurt anyone again, you won’t live to see the sun rise.” I dropped him, took the necklace back to Nick, and left. I didn’t go back to the Academy. Things only got worse from there.
