Episode 6: Library of Solitude
I looked behind me as I ran through the darkness. I saw nothing, but I knew they were there. Stalking me, haunting me, chasing me, knowing any minute I will trip up and fall. And then they will devour me. My shirt was soaked in sweat, and it stuck to my chest. The Florida humidity didn’t help at all.
Despite not knowing where in the hell I was going, I continued to run. I had no clue what happened to the others; they could be dead for all I know…and I wouldn’t be there to save them. Why did I destroy that freakin’ idol!? And now, someone else has our power. Who? I don’t know, but I know it’s the same power because I remember them…those horrible creatures…the Spartans.
I tripped over a fallen light post, and fell flat on my face. My nose started to bleed, and I couldn’t contain it as it ran down my lips. I turned around and faced it. I looked the Spartan straight in the eye. The diamond eyes almost paralyzed me as it roared in my face, and lunged toward me.Moments earlier…Nick, Shawn, and the rest reached the library where Blake worked at. The windows were boarded up and there was a padlock around the front door.
“Looks like someone is already using this place as a safeguard” Nick said, taking his turn carrying Jonathan.
Blake begins to shake the lock and bang on the door. Shawn quickly steps in, “Quiet! We don’t want to attract attention!”
“Shawn, no one is here now, the whole city is empty, we’re the only thing walking the streets here is us.”
“Are you sure about that?”
“Come on, there’s a backdoor that leads to the basement. I may be able to get in through that way.”
“Couldn’t hurt to check” Abby mutters.
“Abby, your awake…you haven’t said a word this whole time!” Blake responds
“Sorry, been kinda out of it…this is all a bit of a shock”
“You’re not the only one…” Nick said to her, and put his arm around her shoulder. She looked up at him and her frown turned into a crooked smile.
Blake then led the group around the library, Shawn ran up to him, “Blake hurry, we have to get inside…”
“Why are you so paranoid?” Blake asked.
“Something doesn’t feel right, it’s too quiet here.”
“Your just imagining things, we’re fine!”
Shawn followed Blake to a staircase that led down to the side of the library’s basement. Blake runs down the stairs, skipping one at a time. He landed at the bottom of the staircase in a puddle of water. He faced the door and jiggled the basement door’s handle.
“It’s jammed, if we get enough power, and we can bust it open.”
Nick looked over the edge of the staircase wall, and saw Blake about fifteen feet below. Nick handed Jon to Brad, and hopped the wall. He bounced off the side of the library wall, off the opposite wall, and then finally landed on the ground. Shawn watched in shock as Nick performed his stunt. Nick and Blake counted to three, and then threw their bodies into the door. It broke down and Blake and Nick were staring into complete darkness.
“Well, after you!” Blake said.
Nick slowly walked into the basement and Blake reluctantly followed. Nick looked to his left and then to his right, staying on high alert. Blake yelled out to the rest of the guys, “Okay, it’s safe, come on in!”
Brad, who carried Jonathan, and Abby begin to walk toward the staircase. Shawn quickly jumped in front of them though.
“No! It’s not safe!” Shawn said.
“What are you talking about Shawn? Blake just yelled up, it’s fine, we’re in more danger out here.” Brad said
“Something doesn’t feel right, Brad…”
“Oh you’re just paranoid…”
Abby began to walk to the side of the staircase, but Shawn moved over, “No…”
Meanwhile, Nick covered Blake’s mouth inside the dark basement, “You idiot!”
Nick didn’t know what to do now. He was surrounded by these bright purple eyes. He remembered those eyes from seven years ago. They were Spartans. Creatures created with the magic power Jonathan had. They were pure black in color. The face was that of a wolf, and the body of a human, the claws of a leopard and the wings of an eagle. And of course, there were those purple diamond eyes that struck fear into those who looked into it.
Back up top, Shawn guarded the staircase, while he argued with Brad and Abby. They then stopped when they heard a scream from down below.
Abby freaked out, “Blake!”
Suddenly, without warning, three Spartans flew out of the basement door, and knocked the three of them to the ground. Shawn quickly stood up and ran away. Brad and Abby look up to the skies while on their backs, and two Spartans fly straight toward them, Shawn heard the cries of Abby and Brad, but he didn’t look back. He just kept running.
“Shawn!” he heard Abby and Brad yell, but nothing could stop him from running.
Moments later…Shawn lied down on the cold ground. He was too scared to scream as the Spartan lunged toward. He covered his face and curled closer to the ground, waiting for it to rip him apart. He heard a loud shot, and a whine. He looked up, and saw the Spartan slowly dissipating into a mist. He looked at the opposite side, and walking out of a dark alley was a young man.
He helps Shawn off the ground, “I didn’t think there were any survivors here.”
“Neither did I.” Shawn replies
“So, who are you?”
“I’m Shawn.”
“I’m Zane, come on, I have a shelter nearby, we can hide out there for now.”
“The library?”
“Yeah, how’d you know?”
“Because, me and my friends were trying to break in there!”
“Where are your friends?”
Shawn stutters for a moment before a tear finally falls down his face, “I left them…”
